The mystery behind the Roopkund lake-

Roopkund Lake is situated at an altitude of 5029 meters. This lake is also known as the Roopkund skeleton lake for the mystery that lies in this lake. Scientists have revealed the mystery behind it. In this lake human and horse bones are found that are around 500 to 600 years old. Scientists have discovered the skeletons of about 200 people near the frozen lake. These people belonged to the 9th century who died due to hail storms. In 1942, these skeletons were found for the first time by a British forest guard. Previously it was believed that these skeletons were of Japanese soldiers who died while crossing this route during World War II. But later scientists have found that these skeletons were of locals and pilgrims. Every year, when the snow melts, one can see a lot of scattered skulls in this lake.

The famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra at Roopkund lake-

The Roopkund lake is about two meters deep. It attracts a significant number of pilgrims and trekkers every year. Pilgrims partake in the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, that comes once in every twelve years at Roopkund lake. During this occasion, locales and pilgrims worship Goddess Nanda. The Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra is one of the most significant events of Uttarakhand. On this occasion, the idol of Goddess Nanda is taken out by the worshippers in a grand procession to her husband Lord Shiva’s home. This grand procession starts from Nauti and ends at Homkund by passing Roopkund.

Who can attempt the Roopkund trek-

You may consider the Roopkund trek as a moderate one. So, without proper preparation, you can’t attempt this trek. Many trekkers attempt the Roopkund trek with a walking practice for fifteen days. Though this trek is not an easy one, you can’t attempt this trek without proper fitness and preparation. This trek requires good cardiovascular endurance. So, you can start your practice by jogging every day. Initially start jogging at a slow pace and then increase your pace gradually. For being prepared you can practice jogging 5 kilometers of distance within 45 minutes. Gradually try to complete these 5 kilometers in less than 35 minutes. If you are 45 years old or more than that, then you can practice walking rather than jogging. You have to be able to walk 10 kilometers at least at a stretch within 90 minutes. If you will practice jogging, then try jogging 5 kilometers within 35 minutes. Moreover, you also can practice cycling 22 kilometers within 60 minutes.
